Wholesale pricing, explained

How do I price handmade products for wholesale?

The standard is keystone: wholesale = your full cost × 2, and suggested retail = cost × 4 (the stockist doubles your wholesale). 'Full cost' must include your labor at a real wage and packaging — if it doesn't, wholesale at ×2 quietly pays you nothing.

Why is my retail price supposed to be 4× my cost?

Because a shop buying at your wholesale needs to double it (their keystone) and still match your own store's price. If you retail below cost × 4, stores either can't stock you or will be undercut by your own shop — the #1 reason makers get turned down by boutiques.

What minimums should I set for wholesale orders?

Common practice: a dollar minimum for the first order ($150–$300) and lower reorder minimums, or case quantities per SKU (6/12 units). The goal is covering the batch-production efficiency that makes ×2 pricing work.
