The most common pricing mistake makers ask about isn't charging too much — it's forgetting costs. A candle isn't just wax: it's the jar, the wick, the label, the box it ships in, the 20 minutes it took to pour, and the 9.5%-ish the marketplace keeps. Price from the complete cost and the profit you see is profit you actually keep.
A dependable starting rule: cost × 2 for wholesale, cost × 4 for retail— where “cost” already includes your labor at a real wage. If ×4 feels impossible for your market, that's the signal to cut material costs or production time, not your pay.
Common questions
How do I price a handmade product?
Start from your true cost per unit: materials + your labor (minutes × an hourly rate you actually want to earn) + packaging. Then add the marketplace's fees and your target profit margin on top. The formula this calculator uses is price = (cost + flat fee) ÷ (1 − fee % − target margin), so the margin you pick is what you actually keep after fees.
What profit margin should handmade sellers aim for?
Most makers target a 50% margin on their direct/retail price — enough to cover overhead, marketing, and mistakes, and to leave room for wholesale (typically cost × 2) without selling at a loss. Under 30% gets fragile fast once fees and shipping surprises land.
What fees does Etsy charge?
For US sellers, roughly 6.5% transaction fee plus 3% + $0.25 payment processing on the order total (plus the $0.20 listing fee). This calculator bundles those into the Etsy option so your profit is the after-fee number.
Should I count my own labor in the cost?
Yes — always. If you don't pay yourself in the price, you're subsidizing every sale with free work, and you can never afford to hire help or wholesale. Set an hourly rate you'd accept as a wage, and treat profit as what's left after that wage.
