Gross vs. Net Profit: What's the Difference?

"Profit" sounds like one number, but it's really two — gross and net — and they answer different questions. Confusing them is how a business that looks profitable on paper still runs out of money. Knowing both gives you the full picture: whether your products make money, and whether your business does.

Gross profit: do your products make money?

Gross profit is what's left from a sale after the cost of making the thing — your true cost of materials and direct labor. It tells you whether each product earns its keep. If gross profit is thin, no amount of selling will save you, because every sale barely covers its own cost.

Net profit: does your business make money?

Net profit is what's left after everything else too — the costs of running the business that aren't tied to one product: platform and marketplace fees, software, marketing, your booth fees, the slice of rent and utilities. It's the real bottom line: what the business actually keeps.

Gross profit says your products work. Net profit says your business does. You need both to be true.

Why the gap matters

• Strong gross, weak net — your products are priced fine, but overhead or fees are eating the profit. Cut costs, not prices.
• Weak gross — the problem is in your pricing or product costs; fixing overhead won't be enough.
• Both healthy — you have a business that can actually grow and pay you.
