How to Find Your Most Profitable Products
The product you sell the most of isn't always the one that makes the most money. Here's how to find your real winners — and your hidden losers.
Ask most makers which product is their best and they'll name the one that sells the most. But "sells the most" and "makes the most money" are different questions — and the gap between them is where a lot of handmade businesses quietly lose ground.
Revenue is not profit
A product can fly off the shelf and still barely earn you anything if its materials, time, and fees eat the price. Another might sell slowly but clear strong margin on every unit. Looking at sales totals alone hides which is which.
Look at margin, not just sales
The number that matters is profit per unit — your selling price minus your true cost (materials + labor + overhead) and any platform fees. Multiply that by how many you sell, and you get each product's real contribution to your business.
Find your winners — and your hidden losers
- 1For each product, calculate profit per unit (price − true cost − fees).
- 2Multiply by units sold to get total profit contribution.
- 3Sort the list. The top is where your money actually comes from.
- 4Watch the bottom: anything with a thin or negative margin is a hidden loser, however well it sells.
Your most profitable product and your bestseller are sometimes the same thing — and the rest of the time, that gap is the most useful thing you'll learn all year.
What to do with the answer
- Lean into winners — feature them, make more, build variations around them.
- Fix the losers — raise the price, lower the cost, or bundle them with a winner.
- Retire the dead weight — products that don't sell *and* don't earn are just tying up time and materials.
Doing this by hand across a whole catalog is a slog, which is why most makers never do it. Hivara keeps a true cost and margin on every product and tracks what you sell — so your most and least profitable products are something you can just look at, not a spreadsheet project.
