How to Price Greeting Cards (Singles, Sets and Sheet Yield)

Greeting card pricing hides in the geometry: a 12×12 sheet 'should' cut four cards, and after bleed, borders and one crooked trim it cuts three. Yield decides the cost, the cost anchors the single, and the single funds the boxed set — get the first number right and the rest follows.

The cost of a foiled card

• Cardstock (¼ sheet at real yield) — about $0.32
• Foil + toner pass — about $0.28
• Envelope — about $0.18
• Cello sleeve — about $0.08

$0.86 per card — $6 retail is an 86% margin. The envelope is the line most card pricing forgets, and the foil pass is why the shiny card legitimately costs more than the flat one. Cost each finish separately and the premium prices itself.

Sets are the order-value engine

A set of 5 at $24 discounts the per-card price 20% while quadrupling the order — and still holds an 82% margin on $4.30 of materials. Bundles work best when the discount comes off a known floor; the boxed set is stationery's native bundle.

Card season is a deadline

Holiday cards sell in a six-week window that forgives nothing. Last year's sales by design set the print quantities, supplier lead times set the order date, and the holiday rush rewards whoever stocked cardstock in September. Seasonal singles can also carry a small premium — scarcity is real.
