What makes a good SKU?
Short, human-readable, and consistent: a piece of the product name (and variant, like size or scent), all caps, hyphen-separated — e.g. LAVE-SOY or ROSE-SOAP-8OZ. Avoid starting with zeros, avoid O/0 confusion, and never reuse a SKU for a different product. Consistency matters more than any particular scheme.
SKU vs UPC — what's the difference?
A SKU is YOUR internal code — free, made up by you, used for your own tracking. A UPC is a globally unique retail barcode you purchase through GS1, required by some marketplaces (like listing in certain Amazon categories) but not for your own shop, craft fairs, or Etsy. Most handmade sellers only need SKUs.
What barcode format should I use for my own inventory?
Code 128 — it encodes letters, numbers, and dashes (so your SKU can BE the barcode), scans reliably at small sizes, and every barcode scanner and phone camera app reads it. That's what this tool generates.
Do the same SKUs work across Etsy, eBay, and Amazon?
Yes — and they should. Using one SKU per product across every channel is what lets software match sales back to the right product automatically. Different SKUs per channel is the #1 cause of duplicated products and wrong stock counts.
