How to Price Printed Apparel (Across the Whole Size Curve)
One design, five sizes, six colors — thirty costs behind one price tag. Here's how to set a price the whole matrix survives.
Apparel pricing has a structural problem: customers expect one price per design, but the design isn't one product. It's a matrix of sizes and colors where a 2XL blank costs $1–2 more than a medium and premium colors carry their own upcharge. Setting one price means knowing the whole matrix underneath it.
Cost one piece properly first
A DTF-printed tee in a mid size:
- Blank tee (mid-weight) — about $3.10
- DTF print + film — about $1.45
- Press consumables — about $0.15
- Hang tag + poly mailer — about $0.55
$5.25 per printed piece — before your press time. At $24 retail that's a 78% material margin on the medium. The question is what happens to that margin at the edges of the matrix.
Price for the curve, check the corners
- Cost each size from its real blank price — size and color are variations, each with its own math
- Set the single retail price so the WORST margin in the matrix (usually 2XL in a premium color) still clears your floor
- If the 2XL margin can't survive, an extended-size upcharge of $2–3 is customary and customers accept it
The drop decides the margin
Blanks are bought before sales exist — the size-curve buy is a bet, and leftover smalls are where apparel margin quietly dies. Buy the curve your history supports, not the default curve the blank supplier suggests, and let per-size sales data reshape every future drop.
Apparel pricing mistakes to avoid
- Pricing from the medium's cost and hoping — the 2XL is the price's real test
- Ignoring color upcharges on premium blanks — heather and specialty colors cost more
- Overselling the size you're out of — one count across channels or apologize weekly
- Buying deep on an unproven design — print small, read the data, restock the winners
One price tag, thirty real costs — this is exactly the bookkeeping software should do. Hivara for apparel brands costs every size and color from its own blank and keeps the matrix counted; its sibling guide on t-shirt run-size math covers the printing side.
