How to Price Handmade Skincare (Jars, Grams and Shelf Life)
In skincare the jar often costs more than the shea inside it. Price the whole product — packaging, freshness window and all.
Skincare pricing hides its biggest line in plain sight: the packaging. Makers weigh every gram of shea and then guess at the jar — which routinely costs more than any single ingredient in it. Add a shelf life that punishes overproduction, and skincare needs sharper pricing math than most crafts.
The true cost of a jar
A 4 oz whipped body butter, costed by the gram:
- Shea butter (62 g) — about $1.88
- Coconut + jojoba oils (28 g) — about $1.10
- Fragrance (2 g) — about $0.45
- Glass jar + lid — about $1.15
- Label + shrink band — about $0.52
$5.10 all-in — and packaging is 33% of it. That ratio is normal for skincare: presentation carries the premium, so the jar, label and band belong in the math, not the vibes. Track ingredients in grams at the price you actually paid per kilo, and the per-jar cost stops being a guess.
Shelf life is a pricing constraint
Fresh products expire — which means margin has to cover the jars that age out, and batch sizes should follow demand rather than optimism. Date every batch, watch what actually sells, and treat a near-expiry bundle sale as planned margin management rather than panic.
The formula for skincare
- All-in cost: materials + packaging + your time — our jar lands near $6 with 15 minutes of whipping and filling
- Retail: 3–4× all-in is the skincare norm — $18 on a $5.10 jar is a 72% material margin, mid-market
- Trust pricing: organic and premium ingredients support $22–28 when the label tells that story
- Wholesale check: at $9 (half of $18) the jar still clears cost — a boutique-ready line by design
Skincare pricing mistakes to avoid
- Costing the shea but guessing the jar — packaging is a third of the product
- Measuring formulas in grams but buying costs "per tub" — convert to per-gram once and reuse it
- Overproducing bestsellers into their expiry window — freshness is a feature until it's a write-off
- One price across sizes — a 2 oz and an 8 oz have very different packaging-to-product ratios
